Immaginario Plastico. Storia della scultura a Bergamo 1900-1945 offers a fascinating look at Bergamo’s leading sculptors of the turn of the 20th century. Promoted and supported by the Fondazione Credito Bergamasco, the book presents the intense and, in many cases, unprecedented research of art historian Marcella Cattaneo. The author acknowledges the specific cultural and stylistic dynamism of the city of Bergamo, attentive to national innovations and those of nearby Milan, yet independent and well aware of its own distinctive features.
There are many key figures along this path, such as Nino Galizzi, Gianni Remuzzi, Giacomo Crippa, Giuseppe Siccardi and Giacomo Manzù, and they are illustrated through a new series of photographs by Francesca Ferrandi. According to Cattaneo, the aim of this research is to “offer an initial but exhaustive survey of sculpture in Bergamo between 1900 and 1945, in the hope of making a small but essential contribution to the history of our city and a new ‘instrument’ for the history of Italian sculpture”. The photographic campaign followed the same guidelines, in order to offer a new vision of a repertory that often relies on archival photographs. It has thus created a gallery of black-and-white plates that reveal the various artistic figures, the linguistic choices made by each one, and the very nature of sculpture in relation to its needs of space and light.
